Works in Translation 1 - Perfume Patrick Suskind
It is really helpful to know some background to eighteenth century France. This YouTube clip is quite interesting. It is from a series of lectures about the French Revolution.
The slides below are maybe useful to read as a superficial understanding of the novel's themes/ideas. I used it in an NCEA course a few years ago, so there is a bit about essay planning in it. This is not wholly relevant for this course but I left them in, assuming they can do no harm.
Grenouille - character and characterisationThere is a framework for taking notes on your GoogleDrive - the Amor et Psyche doc. Here are the slides we used in class to discuss Grenouille.

The button above will let you download a pdf of the novel. It contains a few typos by the way.
The button below is to download the list of professorial reading ideas, in case you want to see it again. The above essay was written by a McGlashan student when I last taught this novel, in 2011. It earns "Achieved" at Level 3, but only just. You can read it and get a sense of what a fairly mediocre essay is like. If you bear in mind that you will write a 1500 word essay, this essay feels a bit short.
The button above will let you download a Word version of the briefing document called "Notes on Your Assessment." You were given a paper copy of this in class.
The button above will let you download a Word version of a finished Reflective Statement. This is the student's final version. He drafted it and then worked on it afterwards and submitted it with his final written assignment.
The button above will let you download a Word version of the prompts used in 2012 for the supervised writing stage of the assessment. You are not allowed to see the prompts before we do the supervised writing, so these prompts are for a text we did not study.
The button above will let you download a Word version of a finished Written Assignment. It is a good essay but it was not the best in the class. It is about a text that we will not study and because of that, I can comfortably share it with you, knowing that it will not unduly advantage you.
Have a look at it but don't get hung up on understanding every detail. Bear in mind that this is the final version. This student's draft as of November was not at this standard. Perfume interactive oral |
