The First World War Poetry of Wilfred Owen
It is really helpful to know some background to Wilfred Owen's situation. Find out about the First World War.
Some notes taken while watching The People's CenturyThe People’s Century – The Killing Fields (BBC, c1998)
"Apologia Pro Poemate Meo"This is a Latin title and it means "Apology For My Poetry." In addition to the discussion and annotating we do in class, find some online resources that will help you come up with ideas for your own commentaries. The Wilfred Owen Association (button on the right opens their home page) has commentaries for all the poems we are studying. Click on this link to see the commentary on "Apologia..."
A previous compiled a GoogleDoc to come up with ideas and details for a commentary on the poem. Download the "Apologia..." document. The Player below is the IOC delivered by Chethaka, Gus, Terry and Josh. It could be useful to listen to it again and think about what you might emulate and/or do differently. "1914"Recently, we have discussed different approaches to your IOC.
"The Parable of the Old Man and the Young""Dulce et decorum est"Our focus in class was exploiting language features more. The two audio players below have recordings made in 2013. Listen to others - how can you take their ideas and adapt them to suit your own style? Listen to yourself - what would you do differently next time to make your response more effective?
"Mental Cases"Here is the recording from the lesson. Thanks to Luiz, Alex, Josh the mint thief and Charlie.
I fear I may have misled you slightly with this lesson. I don't think it is a good idea to structure an IOC by stating the main message and then trotting through a shopping list of quotations. Some adaptation needs to be done. For example, you might structure the whole IOC like this:
Final Preparation for your IOC (and discussion [HL])Below are the slides shown in class on Monday 27th May. They don't contain much that is vital but do contain comments that you have already seen, based on 3 minute talks you gave several weeks ago.

The button above will let you download a Word version of your anthology.
The button above will open a new window with the Wilfred Owen Society's website. There are some good commentaries on his poems here.
